The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Mr Antonio Canhandula has promise to
negotiate with the World Food Programme to cater for the welfare of the Cameroonian refugees in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.
Mr. Canhandula gave the indication when he visited the refugee camps to have first hand information on their condition.
He said that the commission would contact the government of Cameroon for a possible solution of the crisis to enable the refugees return to their country.
Thousands of people have fled Cameroon’s violence-hit anglophone regions into neighbouring Nigeria , the UN had said that it was preparing to help 40,000 refugees from the unrest.
The UN refugee agency and Nigerian authorities have so far registered some 4,000 Cameroonians who have fled into southeastern Nigeria since October 1 last year.
The representative of the UNHCR commended Benue State Government for being a generous refugee hosting state.
Executive Secretary State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Mr. Emmanuel Shior who took the UNHCR team to the area said the state Government was handicapped in providing humanitarian aid to the refugees which number has being increasing and solicited the support of donor agencies.
The refugees who commended the representative of UNHCR for the visit called for its intervention and the resolution of the crisis in Cameroon to enable them return home.
