UHC: Health Experts Chart Roadmap Towards Control Of Infectious Diseases In Nigeria

The Executive Secretary, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) ,Prof. Mohammed Nasir Sambo has called on Infectious disease physicians to expand their focus to the entire health system as well as be more effective and efficient in disease control.

Prof. Sambo made the call in Abuja,at the 2019 general meeting and scientific conference of Nigerian Infectious Diseases Society with the theme “The Role Of Universal Health Coverage In Control Of Infectious Disease In Nigeria”

The NHIS boss noted that accurate clinical assessment was inadequate if the effective drugs are not available, accessible and affordable to the population.

According to him” Despite the growing significance of Non-Communicable Diseases, Infectious diseases remain the biggest threat of human existence.”

“While Non-Communicable Diseases threat develop over decades; infectious diseases global threat develops rapidly causing serious human catastrophes (eg Influenzas, Ebola, Cholera, Measles, Meningitis). “

‘The fact remains that most countries in the world are not ready to prevent, detect, and effectively respond to epidemics of infectious diseases when theses diseases cross international borders, it becomes a matter of Global Health Security. “he added.

In an interview with newsmen, the Chairman, Stop TB Partnership Nigeria,and chairman Local Organising Committee, Prof Lovett Lawson said the conference focuses on Universal coverage in line with global threads.

“We have the Nigerian center for disease control,i must confess they are doing a lot of work.there is need for improved funding, and increased membership to improve the visibility of the society.”

On his part, the outgoing president, prof. Abdulrazaq Abeeb,said the realization in the past one year for the UHC,was the reason for the theme

He said there was need to be broad minded as infectious disease was a very broad specialty,such as animal physician,clinical infectious physicians and so on.

“Health is wealth,and health is a human right issue,therefore we thought the theme should focused on Universal Health Coverage.”Our aspiration was that everyone should be reached.”
