Thirteen Children Killed In Stampede At Kenyan Primary School

Reports says thirteen students have been killed in a stampede as they rushed down a staircase at a primary school in western Kenya.
According to reports, at least 39 more pupils were seriously wounded in the incident at the Kakamega Primary School, according to the Daily Nation newspaper, citing Western Region Police Commander Peris Kimani.
“As kids were going home from school there was a stampede as they were going down the stairs,” said Peter Abwao, a spokesman for Red Cross Kenya. Some reports suggested the stairs collapsed.
“It’s a three-storey building, it’s a classroom block.”Red Cross staff were responding to the incident.The Daily Nation said that some of the children fell from the third floor as they ran.
Anxious parents waited outside the Kakamega hospital for news of their children, Nation pictures showed. It is unclear what caused the tragedy, but an investigation has been launched.
Former prime minister Raila Odinga commented on the incident on Twitter, saying: “My heartfelt condolences to parents that have lost loved ones in the unfortunate and regrettable tragedy at Kakamega Primary School.
“I wish a quick recovery to the injured children and pray that God grant strength to the affected families.”
