The emergence of General Muhammadu Buhari (GMB) and Prof Yemi Osinbajo as the President and Vice-President elect, in this keenly just concluded elections, is one that has broken new grounds in the Nigerian polity and Africa in general. This is the first time in the history of Nigeria, that an opposition party will be elected into federal power; Nigeria has certainly set a precedent which will have positive implications for democracy across Africa.
The journey has just begun for the winners, as millions of Nigerians have put their trust in them in the hope that they will represent the new generation of Nigerians, who recognize the power of the people and the true essence of leadership.
With a lot of promises made to change, secure, rebuild, create jobs and improve citizen’s welfare, Nigerians are hopeful that the visionary leadership of GMB and Prof Osinbajo will steer the country in the right direction and reinforce its position as the Giant of Africa.
It is also the first time that there is a widespread acceptance on the geographical map of the country for the opposition. Hopefully, the country will draw on this strength to diminish ethnic, religious and regional divides for a stronger and united Nigeria.
“Change has come and a new day and a new Nigeria is upon us. The victory is yours and the glory is that of our nation.” – General Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s President Elect
