Wau Shilluk is just 20 minutes by boat from Malakal Town, but it seems like a different world. The town has been reduced to dust, as ongoing conflict has seen the complete destruction of homes, the school and hospital. The few remaining structures are badly damaged. The water system was completely destroyed, and the town has no services whatsoever – no hospital, no school, no clean water. Nothing. To access the community, UNICEF travels by boat, as the roads are still littered with landmines. The area has changed hands between government and rebel groups several times in the last few years. The major outbreak of violence was in February 2014, but smaller outbursts of conflict have erupted since then, the latest in 2017. Wau Shilluk and surrounding smaller villages use to be home for around 30,000 people; today, there are less than 6,000 people. Many of those living in Wau Shilluk have returned to nothing.
