Ebonyi State residents have appealed to the State government to urgently close a mysterious pond located at the Abakaliki International market to prevent more lives from being lost.
They made the call following the drowning of a Senior Secondary School (SSS1) student of Abakaliki High School Presco, Chinonso Nwokporo in the pond last week.
The corpse of the deceased was found floating in the stream with blood gushing out of his mouth, ears and nose when it was recovered.
An eyewitness, Master Okechukwu Eze, claimed that he had gone with the deceased to the pond to swim when he drowned.
The father of the victim, Mr. Edwin Nwokporo, expressed surprise, as his late son was not known to swim. Speaking with newsmen at the scene, the state Chairman of Emergency Management Agency, Evangelist Ephraim Ononye, urged government to close down the pond to stop the continuous drowning of children.
