Sports Festival: Kano Ready To Step In For Cross River

Following the disagreement between the Cross River State government and the Ministry of Youth and Sports over the hosting of the 19th National Sports Festival (NSF), there are clear indications that the government of Kano State is signifying interest to host the championship.
The championship which was supposed to take place every two years has not been staged since the last one in Lagos State in 2012 due largely to the inability of the government of Cross River State to fulfil its pledge of hosting it.
A former Special Assistant to the Director General of the defunct National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Abbah Yola told newsmen in Abuja that the government of Kano State is ready to host the event should the Ministry of Youth and Sports give them the chance to do so.
Yola who regretted that the country has lost the opportunity of organizing the championship since 2012 added that the delay has also caused the nation the benefit of identifying some young and untapped talents that would have been so discovered.
According to him, Kano State has the facilities to host the sports festival and that Governor Abdulahi Ganduje will be eager to play host to the youths of Nigeria any time it is fixed.
“It very regrettable that for four years the country has not been able to organize the National Sports Festival which means that we have lost two championship opportunities that would have given us the chance to identify young and untapped talents.
“I also know that the governor of Kano State will be very ready to host the championship. We are very convinced that he will grant the approval as soon as the proposal gets to him. The only issue there is whether the Ministry of Youth and Sports who have said they will now host the games in Abuja will agree to give Kano the chance” he said.
