The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Major General Faruk Yahaya as Chief of Army Staff.
The confirmation followed the adoption of the report of the Senate joint Committee on Defence and Army during plenary in Abuja.
Presenting the report, Chairman of the Committee, Senator Aliyu Wamakko said the committee found the nominee suitable to occupy the position,given his wide display of indepth knowledge and experience on strategic tactics of military operations.
He said the committee screened the nominee on issues relating to funding of military operations, general war on terror, insurgency and banditry, strategic military operations, such as hard ware and intelligence sharing among others.
While stating that the committee was satisfied with robust nature of the engagement and interactions from the nominee, Senator Wamako told his colleagues that committee also found out that his nomination was in accordance with the constitution.
Wamakko said the committee did not receive any petition on the nominee stating that the nominee had been cleared by the Department of State Security Service (DSS) and presented his code of conduct acknowledgement slip.
He said the nominee possessed the required academic qualifications to occupy the position of Chief of Army Staff.
The President of Senate Ahmad Lawan in his remark said the presence of all the committee members at the screening of the nominee showed how committed, serious and patriotic the senate is on issues of security of the nation.
Senator Lawan said the military alone can not resolve the security challenges, saying that it required the effort and support of all Nigerian.
