Senate Calls For Stiffer Penalty Against Rape

The Senate has called for stiffer penalty against rape in the country.

This is contained in a motion by senator Sandy Onoh, representing Cross Central, during plenary in Abuja.

Senator Onoh, who expressed worry over increasing rate of rape cases in the country, emphasized the need to step up campaign against the scourge to protect the girl child.

The senate in a resolution stressed the need for enforcement of the child right act as it affects early marriage in the country.

The red chamber in another resolution, held a minute silence in honour of all those who lost their lives as a result of rape.

The Senate emphasised on the need for victims of rape to report to security agents for appropriate action.

In a remark, the president of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, called on security agents not to treat issues of rape with kid gloves.
