Reps Order DSTV To Suspend Price Hike
The House of Representatives has directed the Federal Ministry of Information to give express order to service providers, particularly Multi-choice DSTV to reverse the recent June first 2020 price hike and revert to the old price.
The Chairman House Adhoc Committee on pay as you go tarrif plan by service providers in Nigeria, Mr Unyime Idem, made the call when the Minister of Information Alh Lai Muhammad appeared before the Committee.
According to Mr.Idem this became imperative following the negative impacts of the COVID 19 pandemic on the economy of Nigerians.
The committee chairman also directed the ministry and the National broadcasting Commission NBC to come up with robust strategies that would break the monopoly of the service providers and open up the industry for larger participation, and encourage local content participation through content sharing.
Mr. Idem added that this would create jobs, wealth, promote local content, boost the advert industry and ensure that Nigerian broadcast industry operates in line with global best practices.
In his submission, the Minister of Information and culture, Alh Lai Muhammad, said the ministry had already come up with a new broadcasting code which prohibits exclusivity of sporting rights.
Alh Lai Muhammad further explained that the ministry was currently working on some amendments on the National broadcasting act that would address the concerns raised and equally open up the industry.
According to the minister, the ministry is also intensifying efforts on the digital switchover so as to ensure that subscribers are afforded the pay as you go option.
