Remember the Volkswagen beetle?
The need for a people’s car (Volkswagen in German, and in the English-speaking world in the early 20th century as “folks’ wagon”), its concept and its functional objectives were formulated by the leader of Nazi Germany,Adolf Hitler who wanted a cheap, simple car to be mass-produced for his country’s new road network .
Although designed in the 1930s, due to World War II , civilian Beetles only began to be produced in significant numbers by the end of the 1940s.(Wikipedia)
The car was so popular and I can almost picture my uncle come visiting as he usually did on weekends.I always knew when he drove in, the distinct sound of his brown beetles engine, and perhaps his usual greeting, “Is anyone in this House” seems like just yesterday
A very proud owner he was, He would walk round the car inspecting it in the morning before returning to his station checking to ensure there was enough oil and water,Bragging about the cars durability and fuel economy. Uncle was so proud of that his beetle , It was not just a car for him, more like a status symbol, he even made me wish Dad had one .I never stopped wondering why his engine was at the trunk of his car , how come Dads Peugeot was different I had asked
I spoke with Uncle a while ago and we laughed as we reminisced about the good old days and his brown beetle. Hear him ” that brown beetle”. hmmm I cut in, Uncle so it is now “that brown beetle”. It used to be your machine o. My dear he continues, that was then, it has been modified greatly through the years, but even with the way that car has evolved, I do not fancy it even as a free gift”. We both laughed.However.that made me think about many other fads that have simply vanished into thin air that were once the rave of the moment ,the trend, the “Thing”.
Think about it, many fads of our time, technological fads like the black berry phone,or even food and fashion fads so many of them..Aha,you remember, One thing is sure, these reflections help to keep us humble, knowing that the things that are so much of a big deal today may just not be worth the trouble tomorrow.humility and contentment are always great virtues .By the way did I tell you what car my uncle drives now?…. Well,I just might in my next article so watch this space
May our reflections keep us grateful, content, humble and hopeful
