Ramadan: Cleric Urges Muslims To Embrace Knowledge, Modernity
An Islamic Cleric,Sheikh Abdullahi Garba, has stressed the need for all Muslims to search for knowledge that would enable them to carry out their daily activities in life.
Sheikh Garba gave the advice at this year’s Annual Ramadan Lecture on “Islam: The Solution to Problems of Humanity’’, organised by Afemai Islamic Movement (AIM) in Abuja on Sunday.
The Islamic Cleric also called on Muslims to seek for knowledge in order to help and guide them in providing solutions to their personal and societal problems.
“The first revelation to the Prophet Muhammad is about knowledge, ‘Iqra’ which means Read, this has encouraged us to study and learn.
“Qur’an has taught us everything on what should be done to benefit the entire humanity therefore we need to seek for knowledge to get acquainted to most of these things which will be helpful to us or give us comfort.”
“Islam is a complete way of life and the Islamic preachers need to embark on beautiful preaching that will bring people to the religion not by using harsh words,” Sheikh Garba said.
On his part,National Commissioner at the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) Alhaji Mustapha Lecky, advised parents to expose their young children to Islamic knowledge and western education at their early stage.
According to him some specific chapters and verses in the Holy Quran clearly stressed the importance of seeking for knowledge for the development of the society and good governance
“Like the Guest Speaker said, ‘Iqra’ the first revelation is a very encompassing word, not only means Read, but also to understand, study, learn and apply.”
“Tradition and teaching of Prophet Mohammad and his exemplary leadership is also a lesson for Muslims in terms of significance of acquiring knowledge.”he said.
“You can understand that Quran and Islam are supportive, understand and application of knowledge going forward.
“For you to develop a community or to have good governance, you need to acquire knowledge,”Lecky said.
