Proposed Amendment Of NHIS Act: Put Aside Personal Interest -NHIS Boss
The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Professor Usman Yusuf, has called on the National Assembly to jettison the proposed amendment of the NHIS Act.
According to him there is absolutely nothing wrong with the current statutory provisions of the Schemes Operations.
Professor Yusuf, who stated this at the Public Hearing of the National Health Commission Bill, proposing to repeal the NHIS Act,stressed that the provisions in the proposed amendment Bill negates the single pooling system of healthcare financing.
The Executive Secretary charged the Senate Committee on Health to rather look at ways of strengthening the present Act regulatory functions to be able to address the issues of corrupt practices, accountability and prudence.
He said that the major bottleneck towards the aggressive up-scaling of enrollees base, is, as a result of the malpractices of the Health Management Organizations (HMOs) in the country.
The NHIS Boss then advocated for the exclusion of HMOs from the board of the Scheme, saying that the regulated should not be part of the regulating power.
He emphasised that the current challenge with the NHIS is not just the issue of health Insurance but also a matter of national security, as all the paramilitary arms are covered, even though they do not pay as other civil servants.
It is therefore paramount for all stakeholders to put aside personal interest.
Yusuf urged Nigerians to take advantage of the Scheme’s laudable programmes, designed to accommodate every Nigerian irrespective of their socio economic status.
