Plateau United Whip Lobi Stars 3-1 In NPFL Opener

2017 NPFL Champions, Plateau United yesterday began their campaign in the 2019/2020 Nigeria Professional Football League with an emphatic 3-1 victory over 2018 champions Lobi Stars of Makurdi at the new Jos stadium.

There were also opening day victories for Abia Warriors, Wikki Tourists, FC IfeanyiUbah and MFM of Lagos who recorded the only away victory on day one of the 2019 NPFL season.

The ‘pride of Benue’, however reduced the tally when CHAN Eagles striker, Sikiru Alimi converted the penalty kick awarded Lobi in the 33rd minute before Amos Gyang sealed victory for Plateau United with the third goal in the 67th minute.

At the Pantami stadium Gombe, Wikki Tourists recovered from an early setback to record a 2-1 victory over returnees, Jigawa Golden Stars.

Lala Abdullahi shocked the home side with his goal in the 15th minute but Saidu Abubakar restored parity for Wikki in the second minute of the second half before Idris Guda scored the winning goal for the ‘Bauchi elephants’ in the 61st minute.

In Owerri, Heartland suffered a shocking 1-0 home loss to MFM courtesy of Clement Ogwu goal in the 39th minute of the encounter.

New boys Adamawa United also started life in the topflight with a 0-1 loss at FC IfeanyiUbah.

Luccio Kalu Samuel scored the lone goal for the ‘Nnewi millionaires’.

At the Sani Abacha stadium Kano, Pillars who played behind closed doors were forced to 0-0 draw by Rivers United, new boys Akwa Starlets also forced Delta Force to 1-1 draw in Asaba just as Warri Wolves were held to 1-1 by Akwa United at Warri Township stadium.

In Umuahia, Abia Warriors defeated Katsina United 2-0 with Oni Jimoh scoring the first brace of the new season. The eight matches played yesterday produced 16 goals, four home victories, three draws and one away win.
