Northern Govs’ Wives Collaborate To Combat Drug Abuse
Wife of kogi state Governor, Mrs Rashida Bello has called on all stakeholders in the country to make concerted efforts towards eradicating all forms of drug abuse.
Mrs Bello made the call in lokoja at a meeting of the Northern Governors’ Forum which has “say No to Drug Abuse” as a theme.
Mrs Bello who noted that there was an epidemic of drug abuse ravaging the North and other parts of the country, that it was time they speak out in the face of such widespread destruction of lives & potential in the country.
The kogi state governor’s wife said that the use of hard drugs, especially among the youth, had become a real social menace and cuts across all social strata, with both rich & poor backgrounds deeply into it.
Mrs Bello also called on the Northern Governor’s wives to continue to sensitize their people on the dangers of drug abuse as well as the role peer pressure plays in getting people captured into the habit.
She explained that the state had made much progress in efforts to raise awareness on the issues around drug abuse through her foundation, the Kogi Women & Youth Advancement Foundation “KOWYAF” to connect with those who needed help with drug-related issues, including provision for treatment.
In a remark, the Chairperson of the Northern Governors Wives Forum, ,and wife of Bauchi State governor,Hajia Hadiza Mohammed said they are in the state for their quarterly meeting, to proffer workable solutions to the adverse effect of series of drug abuse in the country and to also commission the kogi rehabilitation centre designed to cater for all category of people suffering from drug abuse & destitute,which would be commissioned on Wednesday by the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari.
She promised that the forum would continue to collaborate with concerned groups, the security agencies and parents to stem the tide of drug abuse among youths in various states
Hajia Mohmmadu called on political and religious leaders to join them to urgently find a solution to the menace.
Also speaking governor Yahaya Bello charged women to live up to expectations and train their children in godly and proper manner to check drug abuse and criminality in the country.
The governor said the success or failure of any society depended on the disposition of the women in
bringing up their children the proper way.
“I appeal to you all to tie your wrapper, think less of worldly things and bring up your children in proper way devoid of drug abuse.”
“Those that indulge in drug abuse are the most dangerous criminals. A wayward child is a menace to the society. The Armed robbers, the kidnappers and other criminals we have in the society are all children born and trained by women.”
“Let us educate ourselves very well especially women in rural communities. Those that are already
wayward can still be salvaged by their mothers and sisters,” he said, adding that the position he occupied today was partly made possible by his mother.”
