Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr made changes before the second half that set the pace for Nigeria’s victory at the international friend between Nigeria & Argentina in Russia.
The Super eagles clinched an almost unexpected win in the Nigeria vs Argentina match yesterday at the Krasnodar Arena, Russia.
Although Messi was absent at the game, other top players like Sergio Aguero, Ángel Di María, Javier Mascherano and Paulo Dybala were on ground.
At the end of the game, the locals were applauding and were probably in awe of some Nigerian players.
Kelechi Iheanachi, Bryan Idowu, and Alex Iwobi and all scored to help Nigeria to a 4-2 lead with Iwobi adding a last goal at the 73rd minute.
In midfield were Wilfred Ndidi, John Ogu and John Mikel Obi while Iwobi and Iheanacho led the attack. Speaking after the game, Javier Mascherano commended the super eagles especially Iwobi and his goals;
“We dominated the first half but they scored from their only shot on target before the half time break. Their second goal was well taken by the Arsenal lad (Iwobi) then the fourth goal by same player killed the game off.
“He (Iwobi) took his goals really well, maybe we should have defended better but the quality of the second strike from the edge of the box makes me think otherwise. Congratulations to Nigeria, they deserve to win.”
The Argentines started the brighter side and dominated possession as the Super Eagles defended in numbers. Iheanacho got into a little altercation with his former Manchester City teammate Nicolás Otamendi after he elbowed the Argentine defender.
The Argentine got a free kick in the 25th minute when it was confirmed Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi touched the ball with his hand outside the 18-year-box.
Argentina finished the first half the better side and were expected to finish things off in the second half.
Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr made a couple of changes before the restart as Tyronne Ebuehi came in for Abdullahi at right wing-back, goalkeeper Francis Uzoho in for Apkeyi and Bryan Idowu for Ola Aina at left wing-back.
Rohr substitutions made the instant impact as Ebuehi and Idowu became threats on the attacking front for Nigeria.
Nigeria levelled in the 51st minute as Ogu played in Iheanacho from the right and the Leicester City star picked out Arsenal’s Iwobi who finished off in the left bottom corner.
2-2 and all of a sudden the Super Eagles were all over the Argentine, harrying and pressing the Argentines.
Two minutes later the Super Eagles of Nigeria took the lead through debutant Idowu who raced into the Argentine box to score.
Iwobi then completed the win with a brilliant closing move.
