Nigeria To Hold National Tuberculosis Conference Later This Month
Nigeria is to host National Tuberculosis conference later this month,the conference is expected to exhibit laudable innovations, new technologies and discoveries in the World of Tuberculosis.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja,the National Coordinator,National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme, Dr. Adebola Lawanson who was represented by the Deputy Director,National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme, Dr. Ahmad Muhammad Ozi said conference is an opportunity to bring together think tanks in the TB world globally to Nigeria,
“We will rub minds together and It is a way to share ideas from researches that have been conducted through symposiums and presentations of research works that have been piloted and implemented and have been proven to be very effective.”
‘We strongly believe that this two days conference will make a lot of difference in the TB control Programme in Nigeria as we harness all the experience of participants in Nigeria, Africa and globally form presentations that will be made at this conference.”she said.
Dr Lawanson observed that 2018 WHO Global TB report revealed that Nigeria was among the ten countries that accounted for 64% of the global gap in TB case finding with India, Indonesia and Nigeria alone accounting for almost half of the total gap. In 2017 Nigeria notified a total of 104.
“904 TB cases which is only 26% of the estimated TB cases (407,000) for the country in the same year. This huge gap in TB case finding is much higher among children (aged 0-14years) with a child proportion of 7% for 2017”
“The National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme of the Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with WHO, USAID and GLOBAL Fund and other NGOs Is putting in a lot of efforts to END Tuberculosis through concerted efforts in developing strategic interventions.”
“This will help in the finding of the missing TB cases in the country and help put them on treatment.”
On his part the Chairman Local organizing Committee ,National TB Conference,Dr Bethrand Odume said the conference would create an avenue to bring key TB stakeholders in TB control and the academia together, to foster access to research, technologies and innovations in TB control in Nigeria
“To stimulate the generation of new collaborations for home grown TB research and innovations,create awareness and promote best practices in TB programming in Nigeria”.
“It will also Provide platform to foster the designing of evidence based policies for improved TB control in Nigeria.’he added.
