The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. General Tukur Buratai yesterday announced the establishment of two more army Divisions to bolsters its operational capabilities in fighting insurgency and maintaining the nation’s territorial integrity.
Buratia said the army is to establish the 8 Division in northern Borno State, and another 6 Division in the South-South region of the country.
Gen. Buratai stated this while delivering a lecture titled: `Nigerian Army: Challenges and Future Perspectives’, at the National Defence College, Abuja.
Buratai said the establishment of the new divisions was part of a strategic plan to improve on the Nigerian Army’s operational capabilities in the face of emerging threats to national security.
The Nigerian Army in August 2013 established the 7th Division headquartered in Maiduguri to improve counter insurgency operations in the northeast. It also entered a multinational joint task force agreement with member countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission headquartered in N’Djamena Chad republic.
The army also put in place a Theater Commander to coordinate the activities of counter terrorism initiatives on “Operation Zaman Lafiya Dole” in the North East. Although, some member countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission have deployed troops to their designated sectors, it was gathered that some sectors have remained without the required deployment of troops.
