A Non Governmental Organization, ” The Pause Old Peoples Home Abuja” wants government at all levels to prioritise and provide qualitative care for the older persons in Nigeria, especially pensioners.
The Founder of the NGO, Mrs Hauwa Umar-Jibrin made the call in an exclusive interview with Radio Nigeria, shortly after the organization’s free medical and palliative outreach to aged citizens in Abuja.
While Pointing out that Homes to cater for the Elderly could rarely be found in the country, she said, that gap was what her NGO ” The Pause Old Peoples Home Abuja” sought to fill.
According to Mrs Umar-Jibrin, the pilot project which was established in 2019, has so far reached out to over one hundred Elderly persons in the Territory.
Speaking on her vision, she maintained that Elderly persons that had served the Nation in their various capacities, should not be allowed to wallow in misery and loneliness after their active years.
Mrs Umar-Jibrin described longevity as a precious gift of God and urged families and individuals in Nigeria to treat old people with respect and dignity
Mrs Unae-Jibrin who also expressed her heart felt concern over the agonies of most pensioners, was of the opinion that older persons should not be made to queue for too long to access any form of services , especially in Banks and Hospitals.
” we appeal to the Government to get ways and means to protect their rights. when they go to hospitals, there is no special section for the Elderly persons, nobody gives them any drug in any form. Apart from the fact that when they are ill, they need to get treatment, there are daily drugs that they need. We want Government to make hypertension and diabetes drugs free for them” Jibrin Said.
She enumerated some challenges that needed to be urgently addressed to make the Elderly persons comfortable, to include shelter, lack of seamless access to their pension entitlements among others.
“Some of them retired without a shelter of their own. Some travel from one state of the country to the other for pension verification, some died in the process. this is sad, Government should look into it
