NBTS, Manal Hassan Foundation Canvass For Free Blood Donation
Experts in the health sector have called for a legal framework for effective and efficient functioning of the the National Blood Transfusion Service, NBTS in the country,
They made the call in Abuja at a blood donation awareness campaign, to encourage Nigerians to donate blood to the coordinated by Manal Hassan Foundation in conjunction with National Blood Transfusion Service,
According to available report about 108 million blood donations are collected worldwide each year. Almost half of these are collected in high-income countries, home to 15 per cent of the world’s population .
Although there has been an increase of almost 8 million blood donations from voluntary unpaid donors from 2004 to 2011, equitable access to safe blood still does not exist for many of those who need it.
The awareness campaign was to encourage Nigerians to donate blood to enable the National Blood Transfusion Service fulfill its core mandate and set goals.
The former president, Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, AMLSN, Dr. Godswill Okara,who said there was need for Nigerians to develop the habit and culture of blood donation called for more government support towards blood service.
The Chief Medical Director, Dr Hassan’s Clinic And Diagnostic Centre, Dr Shabihul Hassan, said the purpose of the campaign was in line with the federal government’s public private partnership.
Dr Hassan said the hospital would bear the cost of the blood donation drive,from the hospital to the end users.
The acting Coordinator, National Blood Transfusion Service, Dr Titilope Kolade appealed to Nigerians for more donations to assist those in need of blood.
She called Nigerians to support the center by saving lives, noted that regular blood donors, aside other health benefits, enjoy longevity and good health due to regular exit and replacement of Red Blood Cells after every 120 days.
Some of those who donated blood called on the government to create the enabling environment towards blood donation.
Those who donated blood at the awareness campaign are Nigerians and Foreigners .
