The Nigeria Association of women journalists, NAWOJ FCT Chapter has called on federal government to provide a strong effective legal system that would try and give stiffer punishment to perpetrators of rape and violence against women in the country.
Chairperson NAWOJ FCT, Comrade Stella Okoh Esene made the call during a peaceful protest at Utako market in Abuja to mark the seven days activism of NAWOJ Nation- wide campaign against rape and violence for women.
Com.Okoh Esene who decried recent increase of the scourge in the society as worrisome, stressed the need for collective efforts by stakeholders in addressing the menace.
According to her, life imprisonment or death penalty should be the punishment for the perpetrators of this evil act.
Also speaking Chairman of NUJ FCT council,Com. Emmanuel Ogbeche explained the need for consistency and persistence by media professionals in the campaign to curb the menace.
He also reiterated the commitments and support of the council in doing the needful towards achieving the desired results in the fight against this pandemic that is worse than corona virus.
The campaign took off from the FCT council to Utako market and terminated at the council.
