National Assembly Urged To Review Electoral Laws, Constitution

As part of efforts to enhance and strengthen the Democratic process in the country, Lawmakers have been advised to review the electoral laws and constitution in the country.

Guests on “Politics Today” a Kapital FM Current Affairs Programme gave the advice while discussing on the topic “Godfatherism in Nigeria politics”.

One of the Guests, National Secretary of United Political Party, CUPP, Chief Peter Ameh who lamented on the weakness of institutions guiding the electoral processes in the country , explained that such laws when put in place would put an end to Godfatherism and enhance free, fair and credible elections in the country.

“The weakness of our institutions and election processes is one of the major reasons that brings about Godfatherism , because if you have an electoral system that is protected and governed by regulations that protects the rights of the people to vote and their votes counts, the effect of Godfatherism would go away gradually”

Chief Ameh while stressing on the need for good governance across all spheres of government also called for accountability and transparency in governance among political office holders.

“In Nigeria Godfatherism has been mainly negative , because it has affected the local government, people should hold their governors accountable and not the federal Government”.

The National Secretary ,Coalition of the United Political Party, CUPP, described Godfatherism as the major cause of poverty and under development in Nigeria which he said also hindered nations economy.

” Government system in Nigeria as we speak, there are no local government system in Nigeria, as we speak it is not even the fault of the federal Government but the local government, the over concentration of the federal system is making the governors run away with the attitude of taking the right of the people from government “

Also, another guest, a Political Analyst and Pioneer Director Voter Education, Inter- Party Advisory Council of Nigeria, Mr Akinloye Oyeniyi therefore emphasized the need for voters to exercise their franchise by voting the candidates of their choice.

“Follow your mind when voting by choosing and electing the candidates of your choice, your employment and second Niger bridge is in that paper”

Mr Oyeniyi therefore urged the National Orientation agency and the media to sensitize Nigerians on the importance of free fair and credible elections.

“Let FRCN, NOA sensitize the people on the importance of election processes”

A caller Emmanuel from Maitaima Abuja attributed greed on the part of the electorates which he said remains a challenge hindering development in the country.

“I don’t believe in Godfatherism in Nigeria, what is killing us is greed because when you talk of Godfatherism in a nation, it is not that man that you vote it is the same poor people in the name of delegates, because they are collecting one small contract, or being promised one small appointment that would go around campaigning and forcing other people to vote against wishes”

He called on Nigerians to embrace good governance and shun corruption.
