The House of Representatives on Thursday revealed that it would swear in Dorothy Mato as the lawmaker representing Vandeikya/Konshisha Federal Constituency of Benue upon resumption from its six weeks recess.
More than one month after the Supreme court declared Mrs Dorothy Mato winner of the general election of March 28th 2015 ticket for Vandeikya/Konshisha Federal Constituency of Benue state, the speaker of the house of representatives is yet to swear her in, even though INEC has given her the certificate of return. Meanwhile, Senator Ademola Adeleke who won the senatorial seat representing Osun west has since been sworn into the upper chambers.
The name Dorothy Mato has made social media rave since the supreme court passed judgement on Friday, June 23rd 2017, when it declared as null and void the election of a three time member, Herman Hembe into the House of Representatives, and declared her the winner of the All Progressives Congress-APC ticket for Vandeikya/Konshisha Federal Constituency of Benue State. The lead judgment was prepared by Justice Walter Onnoghen and delivered by Justice Amina Augie
“I declare that the plaintiff/appellant was the winner of the general election of March 28, 2015 with respect to Vandeikya/Konshisha Federal Constituency of Benue, as candidate of the APC,” Augie ruled.
The court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately withdraw the certificate of return issued to Hembe and issue same to Mato and further ordered the Speaker or Clerk of the House of Representatives to swear-in Mato as the member representing Vandeikya/Konshisha Federal Constituency of Benue.
However, Chairman House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Abdulrazak Namdas, confirmed that Mrs Mato will only be sworn when the house resumes.
Namdas said, “By the time the House resumes from the recess, we would have completed all the processes for her to be sworn-in as Hembe’s replacement.
“Our tenure hasn’t elapsed. We are going on a break and when she is through, we can still swear her in,” He said.
However, Mrs Mato has since confirmed that she is through with the procedure required of her.
Until this national lime light, Mrs Mato had made strides severally. Can she be an effective replacement for the position and activities of Mr Herman Hembe, a ranking house of representative? People have continued to wonder.
