Manchester City To Smash Tottenham Record Tonight
Manchester City will make the best start to a top-flight season in England if they win at Swansea tonight.
Tottenham hold the current record for the best start to a top-tier league campaign since the Football League was founded in 1888 after starting their 1960/61 campaign with 15 wins and one draw before suffering defeat.
Spurs started that season with 11 successive wins before a 1-1 draw against City at White Hart Lane, winning their following four games before losing 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday in November, 1960.
Bill Nicholson’s side led the league table for the entire season – despite losing four out of eight league fixtures between January and March in 1961 – and also lifted the FA Cup in May that year.
Pep Guardiola’s side are undefeated in the Premier League, equalling Tottenham’s current record of 15 wins and one draw with a 2-1 win against Manchester United – having only dropped points during a 1-1 draw against Everton in August.
Victory at Swansea would make it two top-flight records in as many weeks after winning an unprecedented 14 consecutive Premier League games in a single season, at Old Trafford on Sunday.
City are also on course to equal the biggest mid-season lead in a 20-team Premier League season if they preserve the current 11-point gap over United for three more games – and they could beat the record of 12 set in a 22-team season, too.
