The Kogi state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has launched the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, RIFAN – Anchor Borrowers Programme in the state.
At the launch in Lokoja, the governor called on farmers in Kogi state to remain supportive of President Muhammadu Buhari led government in order to enjoin more lofty agriculture based programmes.
Represented by His Chief of Staff, Onoja Edward, Alhaji Bello said the Buhari led APC administration had returned agriculture to lime light hence the farmers needed to give him another chance.
The Governor remarked that government was working assiduously towards achieving self sufficiency in food production and as such benefitting rice farmers must be diligent to ensure the success of the programme.
Kogi state Commissioner for Agriculture, Kehinde Oloruntoba stressed the need to put the inputs to judicious use and also ensure prompt payment of the loans as measures had been put in place to check sharp practices.
According to the Commissioner, about twelve thousand rice farmers were screened and certified to benefit from the Rice Anchor Borrowers initiative in the state.
National President, Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, RIFAN, Alhaji Aminu Gwarinyo lauded the federal government for initiating the Anchor Borrowers programme as well as several agro based initiatives aimed at ensuring self sufficiency in food production and wealth creation.
Represented by the National Vice President, Alhaji Abdullahi Awwal, the RIFAN President urged the farmers not to divert the inputs.
Chairperson, Kogi state Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, RIFAN, Mrs Rabi Emaiko solicited the state government support in ensuring effective monitoring of the programme across the state.
Highlights of the programme was the distribution of the inputs including fertilizers as well as pumping machines to some farmers.
