The Jigawa House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Alhaji Idris Garba and elected Alhaji Isa Idris of Gwaram Constituency as the new Speaker.
The speaker was impeached on Tuesday after 25 out of 30 members of the Assembly appended their signature in support of the impeachment.
The deputy speaker, Ahmed Garba, while reading the notice for the impeachment on the floor of the House, said the session of the day was necessitated after a notice was circulated on Monday by members of the assembly calling for the speaker’s impeachment.
“With this development, I hereby declare the seat of the Speaker vacant and a fresh election should be conducted to elect the new speaker,” he said.
According to him, other reasons that informed the decision for the removal of the speaker included rigidity and uncompromising disposition and his unilateral opinion in implementing the decisions of the assembly.
He said, “We the undersigned, the 25 members of Jigawa State House of Assembly, have unanimously resolved to impeach Honourable Idris Garba as the speaker with immediate effect.
“He arrogates too much power to himself which led to a loss of confidence in his ability as a leader for effective leadership.”
In his speech shortly after his election, the new speaker Isa Idris, said that an open door policy would be the watchword of the new leadership.
