Journalists under the aegis of Journalists For Nutrition, J4N has urged Kano state Government to launch a vigorous campaign against malnutrition and stunting in the state.
The group, in a statement issued in Kano,said it is imperative for the state Government to mobilize traditional rulers, in waging the war against the disturbing situation.
The statement signed by Abdulgafar Oladimeji, and Bilikisu Zango, chairman and secretary respective, that available statistics indicate that, Kano state harbors the highest number of stunted persons in Nigeria.
According to J4N, the state Government should ensure the judicious spending of $750,000 worth dietary diversification intervention fund from UNICEF, made available to the state.
Dietary diversification interventions are interventions that change food consumption at the household level, such as increasing the consumption of animal-source foods.
The objective in changing household diet is to increase the variety and quantity of micronutrient-rich foods, to decrease micronutrient deficiencies, including animal-source foods.
The group advise the state Government to hurriedly embark on the search for other diverse methods of interventions from private organizations, philanthropists health donor agencies and Civil Society organizations.
