Insecurity: FCTA Commences Demolition Of 2,400 Shanties Around Railway Corridor
The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, has commenced the removal of about 2, 400 shanties allegedly said to be posing security threat in Ruga community along the railway corridor of Abuja.
Director, Department of Development Control, Mr Mukhtar Galadima who stated this at the scene of demolition in Abuja, said the removal became necessary in view of the security challenges being experienced in the area.
The Development Control Department Boss hinted that a team to monitor the area would be set up to prevent further spread of such illegal settlement.

On his part, Chairman, FCT Task Force on Sanitation,Mr Ikharo Attah,noted that the Ruga settlement had become notorious for rape and other crimes; even as he maintained that the city centre was not for every body.
Chief Security Officer to the FCT Minister, Mr Ahmed Rashid, pointed out that recent security assessment in the area showed that 90 per cent of the crimes perpetrated in Wuye and Kukwuaba districts were traced to the shanty settlement.
Mr Rashid revealed that the Administration resolved to clear Ruga community after assessing its security impact with security agencies.
On his part, Secretary to the Chief of Ruga Community, Mr Usman Abubakar,who called on the FCT Administration to assist in relocating affected persons, said they had lived in the settlement for more than 25 years.
