#IBelong: Stakeholders Call For Enactment Of Nationality And Citizenship Law In Nigeria
The United Nations Higher Commissioner for Refuges wants Nigerians to ensure proper birth registration of their children to address the increasing number of stateless persons in the country
The UNHCR Nigeria And ECOWAS Representative ,Mr Antonio Jose Canhandula made the call at the 4th anniversary of the I belong campaign to end stateless in Nigeria by the year 2024.
But according to article 15 of the universal declaration of human rights , everyone has the right to a nationality. No one shall be deprived of his nationality. Despite this law, ten million people around the world are stateless.
Citizenship or nationality not only provide people with a sense of identity , it’s entitles individual to the protection of a state and to many civil and political rights””
Mr Canhandula said there was the need for birth registration for proper identification of citizens
He urges the Federal government to adopt the national action plan to resolve stateless in the country.
On his part. The minister of interior retired Abdulrahman Dambasau who was represented by permanent secretary in the ministry expressed worry that Nigerians were not taking the national identification number registration seriously
In a remark , professor Chidi Odinaku of the African programmes Open Society justice Initiative who urges the Federal government to acknowledge the reality of stateless persons in Nigeria called for the enactment of a nationality and citizenship law in the country.
In a paper presentation entitled statelessness in Nigeria” a reality, Dean facility of law professor Niyi Olatunbosun highlighted the categories of stateless persons in Nigeria and called for more enlightenment campaign to educate Nigerians on the risk of stateless
The United Nations Higher Commissioner for refuges has earlier had launched a 10year global campaign to eradicate stateless by 2024
