FG To Harness Health, Economic Values Of Mushroom

The Federal Government has promised to effectively harness the health and economic values of Mushroom as one of the means of diversifying the nation’s economy.

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo made the promise in Abuja during the 1st National Mushroom Summit and Exhibition organized by the National Mushroom Growers Association of Nigeria.

The Minister who was represented by the Deputy Director, Commodity Department in the Ministry Mr Sog Tuayerigha said the move became necessary to develop the non oil sector particularly Agriculture commodities sector with emphasis on increased production value addition, export promotion, wealth as well as job creation.

He therefore advised members of the Association to take advantage of Government’s various programnes in promoting the cultivation of Mushroom in the country.

In a remark, the Chairman, Bayelsa State Traditional Council, His Royal Majesty, King Alfred Diete Splif stressed the need for loan facilities and other assistance for farmers of mushroom to enhance productivity in the sector.

The Traditional Ruler also advised Nigerians to develop keen interest in planting mushroom for effective benefits of the plant.

Earlier, the National President of National Mushroom Growers Association of Nigeria, Chief Micheal Awunor said the summit and exhibition was organized to further promote the imnense benefits in the consumption and farming of mushroom.

Chief Micheal Awunor therefore called for the support of government and necessary stakeholders in harnessing the benefits of mushroom for national economic development.

He said the Association would continue to embark on programnes that would boost the productivity of mushroom farmers in the country.

The summit and exhibition with the theme ” Exploiting the Mushroom Value Chain For Nutrition, Medicine and Export” featured paper presentation and was attended by Representatives of SMEDAN, NEPC, Bank of Agriculture, BOA, among others.
