FCT IRS Tasks Residents On Filing 2019 Tax Returns

The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service, (FCT IRS)wants tax entities and taxable individuals to be more committed to the payment of their taxes for effective nation building.

Executive Chairman, FCT- IRS, Alhaji Abdulahi Attah made the call in Abuja while speaking on the need for Nigeria to have an alternative source of revenue generation besides oil.

Explaining further on the implication of operating a mono- economy, Alhaji Attah who attributed the shortfall in oil prices to the coronavirus pandemic, said there was need for the country and Nigerians to make concerted efforts at diversifying and imbibing the culture of paying their taxes, for the overall development the society.

“one of the biggest lessons of COVID 19, which the tax community already knows and is working on, is the need for increased efficiencies in tax systems and tax operations. For example, in US, the cover was able to send cheques to citizens through their Internal Revenue Service based on their tax records” he stressed.

The tax Boss further explained that an efficient tax system would improve tax collection as well as be an additional tool for government social intervention programmes.

According to Alhaji Attah, the FCT IRS would do everything within its power, to institutionalize a functional tax system that would enable people make payment with ease.

” we will do whatever we can to assist tax payers, but it is mandatory and statutorily for taxable persons to file in their tax returns “.

Alhaji Attah therefore encouraged all taxable individuals in the territory to use the easing of the lockdown period, to file in their 2019 tax returns that had been extended till the end of June 2020, to avoid penalty.
