Emir Of Kano Calls For Restructuring Of Health Ministry To Tackle Malnutrition

The Emir of Kano, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has called for
restructuring of the Federal Health Ministry to address Child malnutrition and stunting in Nigeria.

The Emir who made the call in Abuja at the Annual General Meeting & Scientific Conference of Nutrition Society of Nigeria also advocated for the establishment of National Agency for Nutrition in the country.

According to UNICEF Nigeria has the second highest burden of stunted children in the world, with a national prevalence rate of 32 percent of children under five.

An estimated 2 million children in Nigeria suffer from severe acute malnutrition (SAM), but only two out of every 10 children affected is currently reached with treatment.

Seven percent of women of childbearing age also suffer from acute malnutrition.

The Emir of Kano, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who expressed worry over the rate of malnourished children in the country said there was need for a National Agency in-charge of Malnutrition.

“I visit children hospital every year in Kano and 70 per cent of the children you see there are those affected by malnutrition.”

” Nutrition contributes to the brain development of a child, and children that are not well fed can never be medical doctors, lawyers and engineers among others.”

In a message ,Executive Secretary, National University Commission,Professor Abubakar Rasheed who was represented by a visiting professor, Professor Habib Abubakar said the commission is regulating the medical education in the country.

The President,Nutrition Society of Nigeria,Bartholomew Brai appealed to the state and local government to give nutrition the deserved priority by allocating and releasing sufficient funs for implementation of programmes.

“Adequate nutrition supports the mental and physical development of our children. All the five food groups must be eaten every day to deliver an adequate diet to our children,” Brai said.

Senior Programme Officer Nutrition, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Nigeria ,Dr. Victor Ajieroh,called for increased funding for nutrition in Nigeria.

In a Message to the occasion, the vice President Professor ,Yemi Osinbajo said the present administration was committed to lift Nigerians out of poverty,by investing in Agriculture.
