Electoral Amendent: Buhari Declines Presidential Assent
President Muhammadu Buhari has declined presidential assent to the Electoral amendment bill twenty eighteen recently passed by the National assembly.
This is contained in a letter to the Senate and read by the president of the senate Bukola Saraki during plenary in Abuja.
President Buhari told the National Assembly that his letter was in line with section fifty eight, subsection four of the nineteen ninety nine constitution as amended.
According to him the amendment of sequence of elections would affect the constitutional role of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
President Buhari further noted that his decline of assent is based on another section dealing with challenge of the out come of elections by candidates, stressing that the National Assembly has overreached its Power.
President Buhari also explained that the amendment to section one ,five two subsection three,two,five of the principal Act might raise constitutional issues over competence of the National assembly to legislate over local government elections.
