Farmers in Ekiti state, have staged protest against what they called illegal acquisition of 4,000 hectares farmlands and unlawful destruction of economic trees and crops,” which came as a result of the airport project embarked upon by the state governor, Ayodele Fayose.
The farmers who stormed the project site urged Governor Fayose to immediately stop work on the project in respect of the suit they had filed in court.
Displaying placards, the protesters claimed that they did not receive any valid notice before government sent bulldozers to destroy their farms.
Some of their placards read: Don’t Damage Our Life,” “This Land Is The Major Cocoa Plantation, Please No Trespass,” Igbogun Cries Over Illegal Destruction of Our Property “Please Relocate Your Airport to Government Forest,“Gov Fayose, ” “We All Say No To Illegal Airport Project,Say No To Illegal Airport,” and ” Please Leave Us Alone “.
They described the destruction of their cocoa trees and other valuable crops by government without prior notice ‘as “wicked and callous.”
Asking the government to relocate the airport project to the state forest reserve, they alleged that some of their members had died from shock because of the government’s insensitivity to their plight.
Reacting the Commissioner for Information, Lanre Ogunsuyi, said the government had no plan to relocate the airport, saying all land in the state belong to government.
He said, “The project was conceived a long time ago. That land belongs to the state government. Some people are just willing to throw spanner in the wheel of progress, but we would ensure the project is a success.
