CBN Open Tennis : Imeh, Quadre Emerge Champions
Joseph Imeh has defeated Nonso Madueke 6-3, 3-1 to be crowned Champion of the 2020 Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Senior Open Tennis Championship in the Men’s Singles for the first time in Abuja.
Imeh who is a four times runner up, started the game in a high note before Nonso quit the game due to injury.
In In an interview with KFM online sports, Imeh Who commended the Apex bank for organizing a fantastic tournament, advocated for increment in the prize money.
“When you get good prize money that is when you will see players coming out with their best, trying to do everything to win but when the prize money is poor you will see nobody coming out to give their best”.
He however called on the Tennis Federation to train and retrain its officials to meet international stardards.
Also, the defending champion Oyinlomo Barakat Quadre thrashed Marylove Edwards in two straight set 6-0, 6-0 to retain the women’s singles title in grand style.
“I am excited about winning because I had been looking forward to defending my title,” Quadre said.
On moving forward, the Acting Director Cooperate Communication, CBN, Mr. Osita Nwanisiobi, said the Apex bank will continue to collaborate with the Nigeria Tennis Federation and other stakeholders to ensure that the tournament comes out better every year.
“You can see what happened today, those from the feeder moving up to the senior tournament and the building of talent and skill and capabilities. So CBN on our own part will continue to support this engagement to ensure that we discover the youths even at a very young level”.
Meanwhile, in the men’s singles Wheelchair final Alex Adewale beat Wasiu Yusuf 6-1, 6-2 to win the CBN Tennis Open for the eight consecutive year, as Chituru Nwaozuzu defeated Kafayat Omisore 6-2, 2-6, 10-6 to lift the
Women’s Singles title for the first time.
In the Men’s Doubles, Abdulmumin Babalola/Lawal Shehu defeated Joseph Imeh/Albert Bikom — Retired while Oyinlomo Quadre/Serena Teluwo beat Omolayo Bamidele/Jesutoyosi Adeusi 6-2, 6-4 to claim the title.
The Tournament which started on the 6th Nov. 2020 ended today, 14th Nov. 2020 in Abuja.
