3 Teachers Suspended In Nasarawa over Indecent Corporal Punishment On Students
Three teachers of Government Science Secondary school Nasarawa Eggon in Nasarawa State have been suspended indefinitely for carrying out indecent corporal punishment on students of the school.
The state commissioner for Education Alhaji Aliyu Ahmed Tijani announced this after paying a surprise visit to the school in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of the state.
Alhaji Ahmed-Tijani who described the action as barbaric said the state government was scandalised by the action and manner in which the punishment was carried out.
There was palpable tension at Government Science Secondary school Nasarawa Eggon in Nasarawa State following a harsh decision on students of the school who were made to lie on the ground and given several strokes of the cain on their backs, an action the principal of the school Mr Christopher Ogiri said was a collective decision during staff meeting to punish students, especially those in senior secondary three who resumed late after the first term holiday.
The worrisome aspect of the punishment was the role of one of the teachers Mr Nasara Alumbugu who took photographs of the female students who were seen rolling on the ground, crying and pleading for mercy as they were being flogged.
One of the students said the school was harsh on them following their late resumption to school.
Another student who said she was yet to recover from the pains and trauma after the punishment appealed for other forms of disciplinary measures instead of corporal punishment in schools.
The three suspended teachers include the School’s compound master, Mr Musa Adams who executed the corporal punishment, Mr Nasara Alumbugu who took pictures of the students and posted them on the social media and the principal of the school Mr Christopher Ogiri
Correspondent Chris Nyamtu reports that Mr Alumbugu who took photographs of the students as they were being flogged on their backs, posted the pictures on the social media.
